Managing a project so that it is completed on time, within budget and achieving its goals has now become part of many people's working life. A project can range from a few days duration to several years. It can involve one or two people, or many people from different departments, sites, or even countries. There are several elements that are fundamental to planning and managing a successful project, whether large or small. This course provides the fundamental skills of project management: an understanding of the key stages in a project's life cycle, and the ability to use the standard "tools of the trade" to ensure the project is completed successfully.

  • Work Breakdown Structure (WBS)
  • PERT chart

Time analysis

  • Critical Path Analysis (CPA)

  • identifying risks and planning how to manage them
  • making provision in the budget

Resource scheduling

  • Organisation Breakdown Structure (OBS) to allocate resources and responsibilities
  • identifying where resource problems may occur
  • identifying solutions using time and resource limited scheduling or levelling
  • resource analysis to calculate overloads and underloads

Costs

  • calculating component and total costs

Tracking progress

  • using progress information to reforecast planned timescales, resources, costs, outcomes, quality measures
  • reporting progress to others
