Walking you through the e-Learning experience

05/07/2017
Ever wondered what it’s like to do an e-Learning module? Wonder no more. In this blog, we’ll take you through an e-Learning demonstration and the simple process of learning from one of our modules, so you can see how it works as well as what the end result looks like.Although e-Learning has been around for some years now, many people are still unfamiliar with the process or, indeed, the value of e-Learning. Some are wary or see e-Learning as trivial. Others can’t quite understand how you can learn much simply by looking at a computer screen. The key to our success at Cegos is interactivity. We employ higher-order learning techniques to engage learners and ensure that the knowledge they gain from each module sticks. We use everything from videos that tell a story, graphics that illustrate a point, and quizzes to test knowledge and get instant feedback. So, let me take you on a quick journey through our module – Handling Stress – to see what all the fuss is about.
  • Getting started

Once I launch the module, I see an overview of the course objectives and the different sections to be explored. I also get an idea of how long each section will last, so know how much time to allocate. The beauty of e-Learning is that you can break it up if you want to, and there’s a facility to check which sections you have completed in case you forget later.
  • Videos

There’s a lively video to introduce me to the topic, presented by a real tutor. The video has subtitles – useful for those who don’t speak English as a first language or are hard of hearing. Another video takes me through the effects of stress and shows it to be a vicious cycle; one that I can avoid. Each video is short, compact and easy to follow, as well as visually stimulating.
  • Graphics

One section looks at how to ‘understand the negative effects of stress’, using a mix of text and pictures. I’m put into the imaginary situation of a hunting prehistoric man to understand stress as a base instinct, and click on various stages of the hunt to show the psychological responses in my brain. The clicking keeps my mind focused on the learning, so that I don’t drift off! More illustrations show how I might encounter stress in a modern environment, which makes this whole topic relevant to me.
  • Quizzes

It’s important to keep reflecting on knowledge learned so that it stays learned. Quizzes cement our understanding, as well highlight any gaps in our knowledge that need to be address. In our case, we have a few quizzes dotted throughout the module. One looks at how to recognise early signs of stress, and I’m asked to drag the signs to the corresponding times they might occur. Here, I’m having to think about my responses and how I order them, not just sit there passively taking it all in.
  • Finishing off

The final video offers a recap of the main points I have learned, and encourages me to put the suggested methods into practice. If I’m unsure of anything, I can simply go back and look at the relevant sections again – there are no restrictions on how many times you can access the course. Here’s a video that showcases all the above in action…https://youtu.be/XWD1I2VgHdUI complete this module knowing more about how to handle stress and armed with some useful techniques to put into practice. The nice thing about this module is there’s no scientific jargon. I have easily understood all the information I need thanks to the clarity of presentation, the way it is broken up into bite-sized chunks, and how it is illustrated by videos and interactive content that keeps me engaged. And I learned it all in the space of 20 minutes!Of course, we could do this in a live class and take up one or two hours with introductions, discussions and all the other things we do in a face-to-face environment. But I learn the same knowledge from the e-Learning module and waste no time at all. There are topics where discussions and real-life human interaction are beneficial – hence ‘blended’ learning – but e-Learning cuts to the chase and gets more information across much quicker. If you are curious to try e-Learning for your team, Cegos have a special offer on our packages running throughout July – buy 10 modules and get 25 in return.
