The business need – Improving the APC programme

Cegos is a long-term partner of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), and has worked with them on a number of projects. Their latest business need revolved around their Assessment of Professional Competency (APC) programme. The programme is central to RICS as an organisation, and is used to ensure that surveyors wishing to achieve professional membership can demonstrate the required professional competencies.  To support the candidates going through the programme, RICS has a number of volunteer counsellors (existing Chartered Surveyors) who help them through the progression towards membership, and prepare them for their final assessment. The organisation identified an opportunity to update their existing e-learning, improving the support available to these volunteers, and acknowledging the important role they play.

The solution – A bespoke e-learning module

Cegos worked with RICS to deliver a new 45-minute bespoke e-learning module called ‘Your Role as an APC Counsellor’. Based on existing RICS materials, it used a cost-effective Cegos e-learning template, combined with the RICS logo to personalise it to the organisation. The module features a video introduction from the RICS International Chairman for the APC programme, and builds in a full range of content – including sections on the experience and commitment of the counsellor, the journey the counsellor and the candidate will make together, and preparing the candidate for success. The final product – complete with support documentation provided by RICS – was then provided for use on their own Learning Management System.

Cegos has a thorough understanding of RICS as an organisation, and used that background knowledge to help inform the way the project developed. Taking the time to thoroughly appreciate the needs of both RICS and their audience was essential – supporting the creation of a highly engaging piece of e-learning that adds real value to their work. By understanding the project and what RICS hoped to gain from it, the end result combined existing information with new, high-quality presentation – responding intuitively to their needs. The APC counsellors have also been made to feel valued, and provided with the support they need to support others – resulting in positive user feedback, and a more robust APC programme.
